Stone crosses

Columba landed on Iona in 563 AD and established a monastic community. There has been since then a continuous Christian presence on the island. The oldest standing stone cross, St. Martin’s Cross, was erected in the 8th century. George MacLeod called the island a “thin place, where only tissue paper separates the material from the spiritual.”
